Cafe Lily Fails Restaurant Health Inspection

Food debris and employees not washing hands and changing gloves when they should have were keys to the bad score.

DECATUR, GA -- Cafe Lily, a fixture of downtown Decatur dining for years, flunked its restaurant health inspection recently.

After an inspection Tuesday, inspectors gave the eatery a failing score of 67-U.

During the inspection, by the Georgia Department of Health, an inspector spotted an employee handle dirty dishes, then touch clean surfaces that contact food, according to the report. The same employee changed gloves without washing hands.

Another employee picked up something off of the floor, then handled food wearing the same gloves.

Raw beef was being stored above ready-to-eat food in a storage area, some food was not being stored at a cold-enough temperature and there was "an accumulation of dust" on a grill cooler unit.

The report also cited an accumulation of dried food debris on a rack that comes into contact with clean utensils.

As a result of the failing grade, Cafe Lily will be inspected again within the next 10 days. Failing restaurants that don't improve on their follow-up visit may be temporarily shut down.

On its two most recent inspections before this week, Cafe Lily had earned an 86-B and a 96-A.
