Decatur Presbyterian Kicks Off the New Church Year
Decatur Presbyterian Church is hosting this Rise Against Hunger event as part of our kickoff of the new church year, by expressing our commitment to the church's mission to “actively engage in the world” by serving others. The Kickoff Worship Service is at 10:30am in the main sanctuary. We welcome the community to join us in taking practical action to address the fact that too many people in our world do not have enough to eat. This Rise Against Hunger event will include not only working together to package the meals, but also learning about where they will be sent and why they are needed.
What is ‘Rise Against Hunger’?
Rise Against Hunger is an organization founded in 1998 “driven by the vision of a world without hunger. [Its] mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources." The organization describes its focus as to target remote, last-mile communities within hunger pockets designated “serious” or higher on the Global Hunger Index, which are the hardest places to reach and are often difficult to access, lack communication and have poor infrastructure. With the support of our global impact partners, we practice locally-led development by providing expertise vital to empower local communities and providing meals through local schools to incentive attendance and enable kids to obtain an education. Our work starts with a meal.
“We are so pleased to sponsor the ‘Rise Against Hunger’ volunteer event as part of our kickoff of the new Decatur Presbyterian Church year. We hope the community takes advantage of this opportunity to rise up against hunger and pack hundreds of meals. The Rise Against Hunger Experience events provide a fun, educational way for groups to literally lend a hand to people facing hunger across the globe. We combine an assembly line process with an educational experience to not only make a huge impact worldwide, but to touch the lives of the volunteers.” said Senior Pastor, Todd Speed.
Where to enter the volunteer event: You are invited to enter the church using the main parking lot on Church Street. Details on where to enter the building will be sent out closer to the event. Make sure to include your email address.
When is the event: Sunday, August 10, 2025. Lunch will be served before AND after the 12:00 PM packing shift. Meal packing shifts are at 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM.
