5 Teens Arrested After Shooting, Carjacking And Chase In DeKalb County: Police

Five suspects were arrested after a DeKalb County shooting and Sandy Springs carjacking, according to police.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA – Five suspects – three 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds – were arrested Tuesday for stealing a car and leading police on a chase through multiple metro Atlanta cities, according to DeKalb County police.

The five suspects started in DeKalb County where they shot a woman, before fleeing to Sandy Springs where they carjacked a victim and drove to Brookhaven, police said. All five suspects, including 17-year-old Kevin Hernandez and 17-year-old Manuel Hernandez were taken into custody by DeKalb County police, according to a joint news release. Two weapons were also recovered, police said.

Before the arrests, the suspects shot a woman around 1:30 a.m. on the 1400 block of Willow Lake Drive in DeKalb County, according to DeKalb police.

Investigators said they believe the woman was inside her vehicle when the suspects approached her demanding her vehicle. She was treated at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Her vehicle was not taken.

At 3:30 a.m. Brookhaven police received an alert about a vehicle spotted near Briarcliff and Sheridan Roads that was taken during a separate carjacking incident in Sandy Springs, police said.

The suspects drove to Sandy Springs in the same car they had during the DeKalb County shooting, investigators said.

According to the Sandy Springs Police Department officers responded to an armed carjacking just before 3 a.m. at the Harrison Apartments, 5675 Roswell Road.

The victim told police that five suspects had an Ak-47 gun when they stole his vehicle, a 2019 Blue KIA Forte.

That’s when nearby police departments were told to be on the lookout, according to the news release. Brookhaven police said they received alerts from both Sandy Springs and DeKalb County police departments.

Brookhaven officers spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on Briarcliff Road, they said.

In a joint effort, police from DeKalb County and Brookhaven police chased the suspects’ vehicle on I-85 north and Chamblee Tucker Road, they said in a news release.
