Pet Caterpillar's Coming-of-Age Saga Steals Hearts

DECATUR, GA — A Decatur High School student brought a unique caterpillar home one day, and the story has created fan art, memes and even a Pokemon character.

Erika Kulers, who goes by "Oddity" on Tumblr, came across the rare caterpillar, a spicebush swallowtail, on her way to class, according to Buzzfeed. She didn't want the caterpillar to get stepped on, so she brought the insect home, named it Chicken Nugget, and thus began a heart-warming friendship.

Chicken Nugget's species turns yellow before they pass through the pupal stage. Over the next several days, Kulers saw the change before her eyes, and she chronicled Chicken Nugget's saga online.
