The Clarkston Community Center will host a free health fair for adults and children on Sunday, May 20 from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The event will include representatives from a number of local health organizations and will include information and screenings for such diseases and conditions as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, sexually-transmitted diseases, domestic violence injuries and more. The day’s activities are being planned by medical students at Emory University: Keywan Behbahani, Anna Zimmer, Shawn Wen and Jonathan Tingle. Partners will include the Colgate Dental Van, Diabetes Association of Atlanta, AID Atlanta, Center for Pan Asian Services, Center for Victims of Torture, InsureGA, NAMI and CareSource.

“This event is open to everyone, and will be held rain or shine,” said Cindy Bowden, executive director of the Clarkston Community Center. “Many of Clarkston’s residents are international refugees who do not have regular medical care. We know that sometimes a simple screening can identify an issue before it becomes a major health problem. Our goal is to bring families and health and wellness professionals together in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, so any existing or potential health challenges can be determined and a care plan can be formulated. We will also have counselors here to talk about situations that affect health like domestic violence, the aftermath of trauma, HIV, etc. There will be private areas available for these types of screenings and conversations.”
