UPDATE: Clerk Shot and Killed in Unincorporated Decatur

Police are attempting to determine whether the shooting was a robbery or a dispute turned deadly.

DeKalb County police are investigating the fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk in unincorporated Decatur on Monday morning.

Captain S.R. Fore of DeKalb County police told Patch that the shooting occurred at approximately 4 a.m. at the Exxon Food Mart at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Covington Highway. Fore said that a 54-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound and was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The victim’s family identified him to WSB-TV as Harry Wells, a part-time pastor who had six children.

Witnesses saw a black male in his 20’s enter the store, shoot Wells, and flee on foot, Fore said. It’s not yet clear if the shooting was a robbery or a personal dispute between the two men.

A police spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that investigators are reviewing security camera footage from the incident.
