The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Decatur-Avondale Estates.

Good morning, Decatur-Avondale Estates. I'm here in your inbox today to get you caught up on everything you need to know about what's going on in town. Let's do it...

First, today's weather:

Cloudy, humid; a p.m. t-storm. High: 84 Low: 69.

Here are the top three stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. A Decatur couple narrowly survived a tree crashing through their home. David and Brooke Hewitt have reported feeling shocked about the crash, having missed being crushed by just seconds. Although grateful for their lives, the couple is recovering from the loss of their personal belongings and cars as well as the supplies Brooke uses in her job as an art teacher. Their friends and family have set up a fundraiser to help them recoup their losses. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  2. East Lake residents are concerned about drag racing on Glenwood Avenue. ELNCA President Kristine Lucas said, "people get in the center turn lane and just zoom past you, going at speeds very much above the speed limit." Other residents assert the speeding continues throughout the evening. Atlanta Police Lt. Carroll is in touch with East Lake residents to crack down on speeding. (Decaturish.com)
  3. A six-year-old boy found murdered in Decatur 23 years ago has finally been identified as William Dashawn Hamilton. His mother, 45-year-old Teresa Ann Bailey Black, has been charged with two counts of felony murder, two counts of cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and concealing the murder. A friend who knew William and his mother ultimately was able to identify him. The tipster said, "He liked to crack jokes. He did like to draw a lot, color, mainly read books. He didn't want you to read to him . . . he wanted to read to you." Angeline Hartmann, Director of Communications at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, considers this case a testament to persistence and dedication. (WDIV ClickOnDetroit)
