Decatur To Continue Glass Recycling

The City Commission increased the annual sanitation fee residents pay to keep providing the service.

DECATUR, GA -- The Decatur City Commission has voted to increase sanitation fees, thus letting the city keep providing residential glass recycling.

On Monday, commissioners voted to increase the annual fee from $250 to $275, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

That increase will allow the city to transport glass to an outside processor, Strategic Materials in College Park, said Assistant City Manager David Junger.

Beginning July 1, city residents will have to provide a separate container -- no more than 18 gallons -- for glass. The fee increase will first show up in the second installment of this year's city tax bills.

In a poll posted on the city's website, more than 90 percent of respondents said they'd like the city to keep providing residential glass recycling, even if it meant a fee increase.
