Decatur Hosting Bike Registration

Registration will be 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Decatur Farmer's Market.

DECATUR, GA -- The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a bicycle registration at the Decatur Farmer’s Market on Wednesday.

The event will run from 4-7 p.m. The farmer's market takes place on the front lawn of First Baptist Church, at 308 Clairemont Ave.

Bicycles, police say, are a commonly stolen item that aren't typically registered like an automobile would be.

Registering a bike, the department said in a news release, simply requires bringing the bicycle, providing owner contact information and providing the bike's manufacturer and serial number to be documented. A photo also will be taken of the bicycle.

Registered bikes will have a numbered decal applied to them, allowing police to look up a recovered bicycle and contact the owner.

It also helps police quickly pull up information on your bicycle if you report it stolen.

The information is kept in a secured database only accessible by police department staff.

At the event, police also will register scooters that don't meet the size requirements to need a state registration tag.

There is no charge to register your bicycle or scooter.
