DeKalb County Sheriff Maddox To Honor Community Leaders At Event

Maddox, the first woman to be elected sheriff in the county, will present awards to nine local recipients for their service, commitment.

DECATUR, GA — DeKalb County Sheriff Melody Maddox will honor nine community members for their service to the community and for supporting the sheriff’s commitment to public safety in a ceremony being held Friday in Atlanta.

Maddox, who is the 50 person and first woman to be elected DeKalb County Sheriff, will present the community service awards at a ceremony being held at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The event will be at St. Phillip A.M.E. Church, which is located at 240 Candler Road, SE in Atlanta.

The event will also include a celebratory renewal of Maddox’s oath of office and swearing-in, officials said. Maddox, the former Chief of Police at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, was sworn in originally on Dec. 1, 2019, after being named to the Deputy Chief the previous June to replace the retired Reginald B. Scandrett.

Among those who will be honored by the sheriff on Friday:

  • Dep. Danny Jordan of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Reserves

  • Behnoosh Momin, Ismaili Council for the Southeastern United States
  • Ivan Shammas, Telmundo Atlanta
  • Rev. William D. Watley, Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church
  • Derrica Williams, National Council of Negro Women
  • Kyle Williams, Williams Teusink, LLC

The event is open to the public and will observe public health guidance. Social distancing, a temperature check and facial masks are requested for the event. The event will also be live-streamed on Facebook Live.
