DeKalb Parents Not Pleased With New Redistricting Plan

Parents said they're not happy with the new redistricting plan for DeKalb because it still doesn't address the overcrowding issue.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Parents are criticizing the latest redistricting plan for DeKalb County schools, reports WSB. The most recent plan shows that only 102 students would move to the new Austin Elementary School, much less than parents said they were initially told.

The plan was created to address the overcrowding issue in the district by opening three new elementary schools. Two of the new schools are replacements to hold more students. The third would be a new building.

Parents told WSB they thought hundreds of students would be moved from Dunwoody ES, not 102. The latest plan doesn’t match what they were initially shown.

“The whole process was about relieving the overcrowding that is happening in our cluster and we have no real solution, no real relief to the overcrowding is just unacceptable," parent Hela Sheth tells WSB. She said Dunwoody is going to still have students in 12 portable classrooms.

Interim school superintendent, Ramona Tyson released a statement saying that they’re looking at a comprehensive redistricting plan that will look at things like overcrowded schools, underutilized schools and new construction. Tyson said they’re looking for an interim plan that will ensure that students in the cluster won’t won’t have to move multiple times.

The proposed redistricting plan is being reviewed by the school board and who is expected to vote on it next month.
