DeKalb Shreds 24 Tons Of Paper At Event

Nearly 1,000 people brought paper to be shredded at Operation Spring Clean Sweep 2018, a county clean-up initiative.

DECATUR, GA — Nearly 1,000 DeKalb County residents shredded a total of more than 24 tons of paper during an event held Saturday.

At Operation Spring Clean Sweep, the DeKalb County Sanitation Division collected and processed 24.12 tons of paper at the division's central transfer station, it announced Thursday. In all, 995 residents brought in papers, including sensitive personal documents such as old tax records and legal documents, to be shredded.

"According to the numbers we received from the event’s vendor ... the paper processed during the event saved 410 trees, 9,165 gallons of oil and 168,840 gallons of water," said sanitation division Director Tracy Hutchinson. "We are delighted to do our part to protect the environment and preserve our county’s resources.

Onsite shredding services were provided by A1 Shredding & Recycling, based in Marietta.

Operation Spring Clean Sweep 2018 is a DeKalb County initiative focused on litter collection, illegal dumping, and removing debris, trash and grass from streets, neighborhoods, sidewalks, roadway drains and county rights of way.
