DeKalb Woman Convicted of Arson, Murder

Jasmine Lashae Lockett set an apartment fire that killed Tony Hubert, a jury determined.

DECATUR, GA -- A DeKalb County woman has been convicted of setting an apartment fire that killed a Decatur man last year.

A jury last week found Jasmine Lashae Lockett guilty of arson, felony murder, five counts of aggravated assault and three counts of criminal damage to property for starting the October 21, 2015, fire that killed Tony Hubert.

The early-morning fire was at an apartment at 3975 Covington Highway, just southeast of Avondale Estates.

While Lockett was indicted along with Melvin Wayne Griffin III, the jury ruled Thursday that Lockett actually ignited the blaze.

Griffin has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is serving five years in prison.

Hubert, 37, helped his family escape the fire, which started in the corridor outside the only entrance to his second-story apartment. He was later found dead inside that apartment.

Locket, 26, faces life in prison for the crimes. Sentencing will be held at a later date, prosecutors said.
