The project has been almost 40 years in the making, city officials said in a blog post, and will replace some of the oldest storm drainage infrastructure in metro Atlanta.
It is designed to reduce or eliminate frequent flooding homeowners have experienced on Barry, North Candler and East Howard.
The work will be phased in 300-foot sections. One lane of traffic will be closed in spots where work is taking place.
There will be occasional road closures when work is being done across intersection but, for the most part, two-way traffic and pedestrian access will remain open while the work is being done.
It is expected to take 9-12 months to complete.
