Emergency Preparedness for Pets

Gusty winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Irma are predicted to head our way on Monday, and while the storm may not be as serious as a full-blown hurricane, the best thing you can do for yourself and your pets is to be prepared for anything. LifeLine Animal Project suggests taking the following steps to be prepared:

Step 1: Identification

• Make sure all pets wear collars and tags with up-to-date identification information, including the pet’s name, your phone number and any urgent medical needs.
• Microchip your pets—this is one of the best ways to ensure that you and your pet are reunited if you are separated. Register the microchip with the manufacturer, and keep the information updated.
• Place a rescue alert sticker on your front door to notify rescue workers of the number and types of pets in your home. If you must evacuate, write “EVACUATED” across the sticker.

Step 2: Shelter

• Always bring pets indoors at the first sign of an emergency, since pets may get frightened and wander from home during a crisis.
• Pre-arrange a safe-haven location for your pets prior to an emergency.

• Identify friends or relatives outside of your immediate area who would care for your pet during an emergency.
• Locate hotels outside of your immediate area that allow pets, so you can relocate with your pet if necessary.

Step 3: Emergency Travel Kit

Keep these supplies up-to-date in a clearly-labeled kit, located next to the family emergency preparedness kit. Make sure that all family members know where to find the kit in case of an emergency

Items to Consider:

• Pet first aid kit - find a list of what to include here
• Three-to-seven day’s supply of canned (pop-top) or dry food
• A minimum of a seven-day supply of bottled water for people and pets
• Extra harness and leash with name tags attached
• Medical/shot records and a two-week supply of medication in a waterproof container
• Pet dishes
• Disposable littler trays—aluminum roasting pans are inexpensive and work great
• Litter or paper towels
• Liquid dish soap and disinfectant
• Disposable garbage bags
• Travel bag, crate or carrier for each pet
• Blankets, beds, comfort toys
• Recent photo of each pet packed in waterproof containers
• Flashlight
