Aikido is the only purely defensive martial art. Rather than meeting violence with reciprocal violence, the Aikidoist learns to evade and redirect the power of the attack, resulting in the attacker being unbalanced and either projected (thrown) or immobilized.

Teen class at The Aikido Center concentrates on basic technique. Students become skilled at the art of falling--from basic rolls to breakfalls. Proper breathing and centering (zanshin) are an important part of the practice. Training with bokken (wooden sword) and jo (short staff) is included to enhance understanding of empty hand techniques, many of which are derived from the sword.
