First Lady Michelle Obama Recognizes Decatur's Glennwood Elementary

The school has been recognized for its physical education and activity programs.

Glennwood Elementary School in Decatur has been recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama and her Lets Move! organization for its physical education programs and initiatives.

The announcement was made Wednesday by the organization.

Glennwood Elementary, operated by the City Schools of Decatur, was the only school in DeKalb County to receive the recognition.

The awards were given based on benchmarks in physical education; physical activity before, during and after school; staff involvement and family and community engagement.

The students must have at least 60 minutes of physical activity.

"I applaud these schools for creating Active School environments that are inspiring students to be more engaged learners and ensuring that physical education and physical activity continue to be an important part of every child's educational experience," the First Lady said.

In 2010, she launched Obama launched Let’s Move!, designed to bring together community leaders, educators, medical professionals, parents, and others in a nationwide effort to address the challenge of childhood obesity.
