Former DeKalb Police Officer Sentenced to 10 Years For Fatal Crash

The officer was driving twice the speed limit and was not responding to an emergency when she crashed, killing two civilians.

A former DeKalb County police officer was sentenced to 10 years, with three years behind bars, for causing a 2011 crash that killed two women in Avondale Estates.

According to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s office, Kristina Hambie pleaded guilty Feb. 5 to reckless driving, violation of oath by a police office and two counts of vehicular homicide. The state had requested a sentence of 15 years, with 10 years to serve, when she was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge Clarence Seeliger.

Hambie was on duty Feb. 19, 2011, when she crashed her patrol car into a Nissan Altima. Both passengers in the Nissan, Shelley Amos and Cheryl Burton, died in the crash. The two victims were friends for more than 20 years, prosecutors said.

Hambie was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the fatal crash. She was driving 74mph in a 35mph zone.

“Her reckless actions claimed the lives of two innocent victims,” said District Attorney Robert James. “Their families will forever be changed by this tragic situation.”

Hambie is ordered to turn herself in on May 11.
