Former Emory University Employee Allegedly Diverted Student Fees, Tuition to Personal Account

The employee is expected to plead guilty to federal wire fraud charges later this month.

A former employee of the Emory University School of Nursing who also worked with the admissions office has been accused of taking money meant to cover students’ fees and tuition costs and diverting it into her own PayPal account.

According to WSB-TV, Brenda Michael admitted to university officials that she illegally diverted some $317,000 into her personal account between August 2012 and February 2014, while telling students that the account belonged to the university. Parag Shah, representing Michael, said that his client was in difficult life circumstances and made some poor choices.

Shah told WSB-TV that Michael would plead guilty to federal wire fraud charges at a court date later this month.
