Georgia Ranked No. 49 For Women's Equality

In advance of Women's Equality Day, a new survey ranked all 50 states in terms of equal pay and executive and political leadership.

Georgia has been ranked as the nation's second-worst state for women's equality by a personal finance website.

With Women’s Equality Day set for Friday, August 26, WalletHub recently conducted an analysis of 2016’s Best & Worst States for Women's Equality. Only Utah was ranked lower than Georgia — at No. 50 — across a variety of metrics ranging from the gap between female and male executives to the disparity between women’s and men’s unemployment rates.

Here's how Georgia ranked on several scales, with a ranking of 1 being the best, and 25 being average:

  • 38th – Executive Positions Disparity
  • 38th – Educational Attainment Disparity (Among Bachelor’s Degree Holders)
  • 21st – Minimum-Wage Workers Disparity
  • 48th – Unemployment Rate Disparity
  • 26th – Entrepreneurship Rate Disparity
  • 49th – Political Representation Disparity

"Women’s rights in the U.S. have made leaps and bounds since the passage of the 19th Amendment," the report said. "Yet many women still struggle to crack the proverbial glass ceiling. Feminist or not, any American can easily discern the disgracefully wide gender gap in 21st-century America. In 2015, the U.S. failed to make the top 10 or even the top 20 of the World Economic Forum’s ranking of the most gender-equal countries — currently in 28th position and falling eight places behind several developing nations since 2014."

Hawaii and Alaska were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the report. The highest ranking Southern state was Florida at No. 27.
