Hair Salon 'Experience' Opening In Toco Hills

Bishops Cuts/Color, based in Portland, Oregon, combines haircuts with music videos, funky art and free beer.

DECATUR, GA — A Portland-based salon offering "a full-service hair experience" complete with music videos, street art and beer is opening in Toco Hills.

Bishops Cuts/Colors opens for business on Saturday, June 9, in the shopping center. A second Decatur-area shop, at the newly built North Decatur Square, is set to open on Labor Day.

According to the company, Leo Rivera, the founder and CEO of the chain, is a one-time music and events promoter who struggled to find haircuts that were both affordable and stylish in Portland.

The first Bishops was opened there in 2001, making a name for itself as a funky, music-oriented business with its free beer and tattooed stylists. The company now has 11 corporate-owned stores and more than 200 franchise locations throughout the United States.

The new, unisex shop is located at 2929 E. North Druid Hills Rd. Its hours will be 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.

The salon's arrival comes at a time of massive change for the Toco Hills Shopping Center. Since being purchased by development company Edens at the end of 2015, there's been huge turnover among the shops and restaurants that have called the complex home for decades.

Last month, The Bagel Palace called it quits after more than 25 years at Toco Hills, citing the new landlord and increased rent as reasons. Since 2015, Famous Pub, French restaurant Petite Auberge, Shoe Center, jewelry store Alexander's of Atlanta and Radio Shack have all closed up shop. The Georgia Department of Labor also has moved an office that was there.
