HAZMAT Investigation: Decatur Businesses Reopen After Evacuation

A suspicious package on the road near Decatur Square was found Thursday. The bomb squad and Hazmat teams were called to the scene.

DECATUR, GA — A potentially hazardous material found on a road near Decatur Square shut down some streets and businesses Thursday, officials said. Business were asked to evacuate, but have reopened, according to WSB.

Evacuations began around 12:30 p.m. and were lifted around 6 p.m. City of Decatur fire chief Toni Washington said the DeKalb bomb squad and DeKalb Hazmat teams were called. Authorities determined there were no explosives, but are still investigating what the package is.

Church Street was blocked off between E. Trinity Place and Sycamore Street near the Decatur Presbyterian Church and the Law Office of the Public Defender.
