Camp Horizon history: In 1982, a handful of friends brainstormed ways to improve the lives of Atlanta’s abused and neglected children. They agreed that reaching troubled youth through outdoor recreation and one-to-one mentoring was the best plan. That summer, Camp Horizon was born. Our first camp was a weekend retreat with eight campers sleeping in tents at a local church parking lot. From those humble beginnings, we’ve grown to provide year-round programming for children aged 8-23. Partnering with the Atlanta area Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and Camp Twin Lakes, we provide life-changing experiences at state of the art camping facilities.
Although it wasn’t our original plan, over the years, we have become a consistent “family” for the foster children we serve. We have grown to be a healthy family and a safe place to grow and be loved along the way. Our loyal volunteers and intentional instruction teach the children life-skills and provide connections they may be missing in other areas of their lives. Through our core values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE (The Three R’s) and our daily Self Esteem class, our campers learn self-awareness, anger management, personal safety, appropriate boundaries and self-control. These skills mixed with endless encouragement help increase hope for their futures.

Camp Horizon has grown hundreds of emotionally wounded children into healthier adults. Our former campers will be the people who impact their communities with great strength. Not only will they break the cycle of abuse in their own lives, but they’ll also be prepared to help prevent abuse in the lives of those around them. They will take what they have received from Camp Horizon and grow it into a powerful agent for social change; bringing meaning to our motto: A new day, a better day is on the horizon!
