High Schools in Avondale, Decatur Ranked Among State's Best

U.S. News and World Report has released its 2016 ranking of high schools in Georgia, and throughout the nation.

A pair of high schools in Decatur and Avondale Estates have been ranked among Georgia's best by U.S. News and World Reports.

DeKalb School of the Arts, in Avondale Estates, was ranked No. 3 in the state, according to U.S. News' rankings of 21,000 public high schools across the country.

Decatur High School checked in at No. 13 on the list.

Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology was ranked No. 1 on the 2016 list of Georgia's best high schools.

In its report, U.S. News cited the School of the Arts' 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio and college-readiness index score of 82.4 out of 100.

"Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at DeKalb School of the Arts is 100 percent. The student body makeup is 21 percent male and 79 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 65 percent," the report reads

DeKalb School of the Arts is 1 of 25 high schools in the Dekalb County school system.

Decatur High was noted for its 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio, which is well lower than the state average. Its 59.4 college-readiness score also tops the state average.

"Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Decatur High School is 78 percent. The student body makeup is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 45 percent," the report reads.

Decatur High School is the only high school in the City Schools of Decatur system.
