Inmate Death At DeKalb County Jail
An inmate was found unresponsive inside a cell at the DeKalb County Jail.
DEKALB COUNTY, GA — An inmate died of an apparent suicide while in custody at the DeKalb County Jail.
Officers performing security checks discovered Jaquay Smith, 21, of Stone Mountain unresponsive inside a cell on February 5, according to a news release. Emergency medical services were rendered immediately by jail medical staff and DeKalb Fire Rescue, but Smith was pronounced deceased upon his arrival at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Smith was arrested by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on February 1, 2022, on warrants issued by the DeKalb County Police Department. He was being held in custody without bond. He was facing charges for Aggravated Assault with Weapon and Armed Robbery.

The DeKalb Medical Examiner’s report and official cause of death have not been received. The incident is still under investigation.
