A lot of learning is taking place at the International Community School (ICS) in Decatur in a large truck outside the school building. Called STE(A)M Truck, this innovative mobile lab inspires children to learn science, technology, engineering, arts and math by bringing the tools, equipment and mentors directly to their school.
STE(A)M truck is a 21st century build-mobile where students tackle real problems while building grit, self-reliance, ingenuity, teamwork and artisanship. Children learn by making creative projects with their hands.

The first truck was launched last year with a grant from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement.
For 20 days during March and April from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. ICS students in third through fifth grades are learning about sustainability through activities such as recycling materials into artwork, creating games and building a working radio.
Olivia McDonald-Murray, ICS International Baccalaureate coordinator/administrator, said, “We want to structure more opportunities for our students to have real world experiences using science, technology, engineering, art and math. STE(A)M Truck is an innovative program that lets us do that without the school incurring the cost of expensive equipment.”
James Martin, founder of STE(A)M Truck, said, “Four walls don’t work for all students. Our truck gives kids a chance to get their hands dirty, learn a lot and have fun as they become ‘makers.’ ”
On April 21 from 10 a.m. until noon the public is invited to a Share Event at ICS to see firsthand the amazing projects students have created with their hands.
International Community School is a DeKalb County charter school that serves local students as well as refugees and immigrants from 30 countries.
