Kroger Shootings Were Robbery-Turned-Shootout: Police

DeKalb County Police say three men followed a couple from the grocery store into the parking lot before the shootout.

DECATUR, GA — The parking lot shootings at a DeKalb County Kroger Friday afternoon were the result of an attempted robbery that turned into a shootout between the robbers and their intended victims, police say.

WXIA-TV reports that the three people who were shot outside the Kroger at the intersection of Wesley Chapel and South Hairston roads near Decatur were armed and intended to rob a couple who was leaving the store. According to DeKalb County Police, "a large amount of gunfire" was exchanged.

A spokeswoman told WXIA that three men started following the couple in the grocery store and followed them into the parking lot. All three of the suspects were shot and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Neither of the intended victims was injured and no bystanders were harmed, police told the station. The spokeswoman said the attempted robbers are not believed to have known the intended victims. It was unclear whether the attack was an attempted robbery or carjacking, she said.
