Man Threw Dog Off Of DeKalb Exit Ramp: Police

The dog was thrown onto Interstate 20 and later died as a result of its injuries, DeKalb County Police said.

DECATUR, GA — A man intentionally threw a small dog off of an exit ramp on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County on Wednesday afternoon, killing the animal, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said multiple witnesses saw Michael Copeland, 48, of Cumming, pick up the dog and toss it onto the highway. The incident happened at the ramp to Wesley Chapel Road at about 1 p.m., Campbell said.

The dog later died due to its injuries.

Copeland was arrested at the scene and is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, according to DeKalb County Jail records. He was booked at the jail at 2:43 p.m. on Wednesday and released at midnight, jail records say.
