North Decatur Cityhood Plans Revealed, Population Of 82K
Sen. Sally Harrell, who is preparing a proposal for a new city within DeKalb County, will hold a virtual town hall April 7.
DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Some elected officials and community members have been advocating for a new city in DeKalb County.
The City of North Decatur movement would establish a boundary that includes the unincorporated area in Dekalb County located south of I-85, west of I-285 and north of Atlanta, Avondale Estates and Decatur, excluding the areas presently in the cities of Brookhaven, Clarkston, and Tucker, according to the North Decatur City Initiative website. The city would have a population of about 82,000 people.
The City of North Decatur would be responsible for planning and zoning, roads and drainage, and parks and recreation, according to its website. The City would partner and collaborate with Dekalb County on public safety, continuing use of the Dekalb County Police Department and other services

State Senator Sally Harrell told WAGA-TV that the goal is to have a bill introduced in the next legislative session. She is planning a virtual town hall at 7 p.m. on April 7 via Zoom. RSVP online.
