Oakhurst Burglary Suspect Arrested

The suspect was carrying a laptop, jewelry, alcohol and loose change, police said.

DECATUR, GA -- Calls from at least two residents helped police arrest a burglary suspect in Oakhurst on Monday.

Michael Johnson, 54, of Decatur, is charged with burglarly in the first degree after the arrest.

At about 11: 45 a.m., Decatur Police responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 200 block of Winter Avenue. The caller reported seeing a man trying to enter a window at the rear of a house on East Lake Drive.

Officers found a window unlocked but closed and all other doors and windows secured. They canvassed the area, but were unable to find the suspect.

Then, at about 12:31 p.m., police received another call from a resident of the 200 block of East Lake Drive who reported seeing a man coming from behind a neighbor's house carrying a computer bag.

While responding, officers were flagged down by the original caller who pointed out the suspect walking on Mellrich Avenue.

The man, whom police identified as Johnson, was carrying bags containing jewelry, a laptop, alcohol, tools and loose change.

The house on East Lake Drive that had been found secured earlier was no longer secured and appeared to have been burglarized, police said.

The homeowner arrived, police said, and identified the recovered items as belongings missing from his home.
