Protect Your Pets This Fourth of July, And Meet LifeLine's DeKalb County Pet of the Week: Umpa
Holiday safety tips, and meet our Pet of the Week, Umpa, who is a rare combination of relaxed, polite, smart and handsome!

The Fourth of July is a fun day for most of us, but it’s not so great for our four-legged kids. Most pets find the noise and commotion of the holiday so stressful that they flee in fear and become lost. LifeLine Animal Project suggests you take the following precautions to ensure your pet’s safety on the holiday:
1. Don’t take your pet to fireworks displays. Although your dog may love to get out in public with you, very few animals enjoy the sound of fireworks. Most become terrified and will try to get away.
2. Never leave pets outside and unattended. Even if they are in a fenced yard, animals panic, escape and get lost.

3. Keep your pets inside your home. Your pet’s hearing is far more sensitive than yours. Keeping your cat or dog indoors helps them to feel protected, and the sound of a radio or TV can help mute the sound of fireworks.

4. Help your pet stay calm. If your pet gets anxious during thunderstorms, fireworks will really scare her! Try using a thundershirt or tranquilizer which you can purchase from your vet.
5. ID tags and microchips are your pet’s ticket home. Make sure your pets are wearing identification and are microchipped, especially on July 4th, so they can be returned if they do get lost.
