Railroad Crossing Improvements Coming in Downtown Decatur
Work on the crossings is expected to start in September.

DECATUR, GA -- Eagerly anticipated improvements to the railroad crossings in downtown Decatur are on the way.
Work on the crossings, at both Candler Street and North McDonough Road, will begin in September and take from nine months to a year to complete, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.
Both crossings, each of which has two intersections, will get smoother slopes, with the goal of preventing the occasional truck or bus that has gotten stuck on the tracks in recent years.

There also will be crossings accessible to bicycles, pedestrians and wheelchairs added on both sides of Candler and McDonough. Currently, pedestrians share the roadway with vehicles at the crossings.
New traffic signals will provide protected left-hand turns at the crossings, as well. The total budget for the project is about $2.6 million, the paper reports.
