Southwest DeKalb Evacuated Due To Power Outage

Students were taken to Martin Luther King Jr. High School and Columbia High School.

DECATUR, GA — Severe storms Monday left Southwest DeKalb High School partially without power Tuesday morning, causing an evacuation of the building, DeKalb County Schools said.

The school district said freshmen and sophomores were taken to Martin Luther King Jr. High School while juniors and seniors were transported to Columbia High School.

"The DeKalb County School District is taking necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of our students," school officials said in a statement.

Students will receive lunch at their evacuation sites and should return to Southwest DeKalb before the end of school hours for dismissal, school officials said. Parents can pick up their students from the evacuation sites and will need proper identification to do so.

Southwest had no phone or internet service as of Tuesday morning.

"DCSD is closely coordinating with Georgia Power and will promptly notify families when power is restored," school officials said in the statement.
