This time of year many of us experience joy and wonder. And, I know, the holidays seem to be one big commercial. Do we want to throw the baby out with the bath water here? I know… lights and gifts and money and whatever way we use this sacred holiday in a commercial way. Aren’t we going further in that direction if we combat it with skepticism and doubt.
Wonder is wonder, no matter what evokes it. Maybe that’s the lesson. I see something, marvel at it, but then think “ugh- ruining this amazing time of year”. That might just be cementing that idea in place. Why does it have to follow some guidelines or rules? Maybe that pure feeling of joy and wonder is enough.
What an amazing feeling! To look at something in awe and just be delighted in whatever it is. I certainly don’t do this enough in my own life. Could it be that tragedy, that pain, that inconvenience, would be just as wonder-filled a moment? So, what if we look at everything with new eyes- without an idea of how it should or shouldn’t be? What would happen?
Maybe that’s the lesson in the season. To feel the freshness, the possibility, the wonder and move forward from there.
