Waffle House Robber Arrested After Standoff: Police
Lawrenceville Highway was shut down for hours after the man holed up in a hotel across the street from the restaurant, police said.

DECATUR, GA — A five-hour standoff Monday morning at a DeKalb County motel is over, with a man police say tried to rob a local Waffle House in custody.
The DeKalb County bomb squad and SWAT officers responded Monday morning to the Knights Inn, at 2942 Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker. Hotel guests were evacuated and the highway near Interstate 285 was shut down during the standoff.
A police spokeswoman said the standoff started after a man tried to rob the Waffle House at Lawrenceville Highway and Montreal Road at about 3 a.m. He ran across the street to the motel and holed up in a room there, police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said.

After failing to talk the man out, police fired gas canisters into the room. Eventually, they made their way into the room and captured the man, who was in the bathroom. No one was injured, Campbell said. Police had not said Monday morning whether the man was armed.

The standoff ended at about 7:41 a.m. Campbell said. Lawrenceville Highway was reopened by 8:30 a.m.
