Watch this Week: The 48 Hour Film Project Screenings

For the past month I've been preparing, with my Joke Pony mates, to do The 48 Hour Film Project, during which filmmaking teams from all over the Atlanta area make a short film in just a weekend.

We started by assembling a crack crew, including a few industry vets, and plenty of rookies ready to hustle.  We put together a list of actors to be on hold for Saturday, June 15, in case the script should call for their type.  And then we waited to draw our genre, prop, character and line of dialogue at 7pm on Friday, June 14.

We drew Mistaken Identity for the genre, and our film had to include a towel, inventor Linda or Liam Oakley-Brown, and the line, "You know that's not what I said."

At that point, the writers hit the ground running, putting together a script for a 4-7 minute short film per the project rules.  We had our final cast by 2:30am on Saturday, the 15th, and the final script was out to them by 4:30am.

Our headquarters were right here in Avondale Estates - at my house - and that was where the location of the filming ended up taking place, too.  But first we had to transform the joint into inventor Liam Oakley-Brown's house.  Our Prop Master and Set Designer were working hard on that by 8am and by 1pm, with everyone in place, the first shot went up.  We wrapped at 3am, and the editing continued, running all the way up to the wire.  By 7pm on Sunday, June 16th, we were driving to the drop off location (Mellow Mushroom Midtown) with all our paperwork and a flash drive with our nearly 6.5 minute film on it.  In the end, we had 15 minutes to spare, an incredible experience to learn from, and many memories to look back on.

Team Joke Pony's film, 12 Minutes, will screen in Group A at 7:15pm on Tuesday, June 25.  Come check it out and see what filmmakers can do in just one weekend.

The 48 Hour Film Project is an international contest.  No one is paid for their work, it all has to be volunteer, and non-cash prizes are given in participating cities internationally.  Come see the Premiere Screenings this week only at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema, 931 Monroe Drive.  The screenings are Tuesday to Thursday, by group, with 2 screenings a night starting at 7:15pm and 9:45pm.  We'd love to see you there!  And maybe you can join us or assemble your own team next year.
