Why World Spay Day is Important, and Meet our Pets of the Week!
Every twelve seconds, an animal is euthanized in U.S. shelters. Spaying and neutering saves lives!
All the excitement surrounding the snowstorm (that never happened) this week overshadowed a very important day. Tuesday, February 24, was World Spay Day, a day where spay/neuter awareness was promoted and funds were raised to help underserved communities fix their pets. Governor Deal also proclaimed the month of February as “Spay Neuter Awareness Month” in Georgia.
Why is Spay Day so important? Did you know that nearly 3 million healthy and treatable cats and dogs are put down in U.S. shelters every year? That’s one every 12 seconds. Spay/neuter is an effective and humane way to save animals’ lives, since preventing litters reduces the number of animals for whom resources are not available.
LifeLine Animal Project is the largest provider of spay/neuter services in Atlanta. Since 2002, LifeLine has performed over 80,000 free and low cost spay/neuter surgeries in Atlanta, and we performed 12,000 surgeries alone last year.

LifeLine celebrated World Spay Day by offering a “Fifty Pit Fix” promotion, thanks to a grant from the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation. The purpose of the promotion was to help reduce the staggering number of pit bulls that enter our DeKalb County and Fulton County Animal Services shelters by eliminating financial barriers and encouraging residents to get their pit bull dogs fixed. So this past Tuesday, we spayed and neutered pit bull and pit bull mixed-breed dogs at the LifeLine Spay & Neuter Clinics, located in Avondale Estates and College Park.
Some free spay/neuters are still available, so if you know of someone who cannot afford to have their pit bull or pit bull mix spayed or neutered, please have them contact community@lifelineanimal.org or call 678-883-2FIX (678-883-2349).
