Millage Rate Decided In Douglas Co.

Here's how a decision on the millage rate in Douglas County affects local property taxes.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Officials on Tuesday voted to uphold the current millage rate of 12.063 mills at a local commissioners meeting in Douglas County.

The vote took place at the Douglas County Board of Commissioners legislative meeting, which is held in Citizens Hall of the Douglas County Courthouse in Douglasville.

This is the first time in five years that county officials have not raised the millage, they said. It came after the analysis of budgetary data from the local administrative office and citizen input, county officials said.

Per state law, officials said there is a requirement to calculate the rollback millage rate after the total digest of taxable properties is ready "to generate the same revenue as the previous year would have if no reassessments had occurred. Although the board of commissioners will not increase taxes, maintaining the current millage rate will result in a percentage increase in property taxes due to higher property values."

For a non-homestead residential property with a fair market value of $350,000, officials said the yearly price tag for taxes is about $64.

This slightly decreases to about $61 for homeowners with homestead exemption, officials said.

"We have held the millage rate steady while continuing to deliver strong, reliable services to our residents," Douglas County Commission Chair Dr. Romona Jackson Jones said in a news release. "This long-term stability speaks to our commitment to supporting a community that's growing and changing. Even as costs rise and service needs shift, we remain focused on responsible operations, thoughtful planning, and providing the high standard of service our citizens expect and deserve."
