DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Authorities say they have arrested a man accused of sexually abusing a child in Douglas County.
The FBI notified the Douglas County Sheriff's Office of the suspected abuse Monday, the sheriff's office said Tuesday.
The federal agency had been investigating child exploitation when agents uncovered child sexual abuse material involving a child and man in Douglas, authorities said. The FBI passed along the material and other case information to the sheriff's office, authorities said.
Local investigators were able to identify the child, authorities said. Additionally, they identified the man as 44-year-old registered sex offender Robert Burford, authorities said.
An arrest warrant was obtained to charge Burford with aggravated child molestation, and a second warrant was acquired to search his home, authorities said.
During the search, authorities said they found and seized evidence they say matched items seen in the child sexual abuse material.
Burford remained in custody at the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday, jail records showed.
