VILLA RICA, GA — A police shooting killed a 53-year-old man Wednesday evening in the 3000 block of Connors Road, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday.
The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Authorities said Bradley Cox of Villa Rica was fatally shot.
Douglas County deputies were responding to an initial shooting when they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, the GBI said. His condition was not immediately known.
When deputies approached the second man at the scene, who they identified as Cox, he went back into his home, the GBI said.
Deputies then requested the assistance of their SWAT team, which arrived and attempted to negotiate with Cox, the GBI said.
The agency added Cox was non-compliant, and the SWAT team deployed OC gas (known as pepper spray) to try to remove him from the home.
SWAT went into the home when Cox refused to come out, the GBI said.
Authorities encountered Cox in a hallway, and when he displayed a sword, two SWAT deputies shot Cox multiple times, the GBI said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the GBI said.
His body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Douglas Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
