DeKalb CEO: Builders on Senior Centers Not Fulling Contracts

DeKalb County senior citizens recently complained that work to build three centers is months behind schedule. The interim CEO agreed.

Contractors working to build three DeKalb County senior centers -- months behind in their construction -- are not fulfilling their contracts.

That was the response from DeKalb County interim CEO Lee May last week when senior citizens shared their complaints about the months of delays and lack of progress on the centers set to open last year, reports WABE radio.

“If you go to any of the centers, you see that there is not work really going on right now,” May said at the Aug. 12 county commission meeting.

Seniors said they are wary of driving to a temporary center at a school because of traffic and lack of parking.

The county has budgeted $11 million to replace the South DeKalb and North DeKalb senior centers and build a center in the Toco Hill area. WABE reports the projects are plagued with probems: one project manager has resigned and his replacement died.

May said, “We have contractors that are not fulfilling what we believe is the full obligations of their contract.”

He is now deciding whether to recommend the county seek new contractors or work things out with the current companies.
