DHS Girls Hold on For Victory in Last Game of Tournament

Lady Wildcats win 44-35, after dropping the first two games of the Longhorn Shootout at Kell High School

South Forsyth High School remained within two points of the Dunwoody girls basketball team in the final day of play in the Longhorn Shootout basketball tournament at Kell High School Tuesday, but the Lady Wildcats added 10 points to their score in each of the final two periods to move ahead 44-35.

Dunwoody held South Forsyth to only 2 points in the third period.

Cynthia Onyeneho sparked the Lady Wildcat offense with 23 points, hitting everything she shot in the second period: two sets of back-to-back free throws and two free throws, including one at the halftime buzzer to put Dunwoody up 24-22. Onyeneho was also hot from the free- throw line, shooting 7-for-8, and contributed four field goals in the final period.

Nicolette Wise scored 6 of her 8 points in the second period on three field goals, but
Dunwoody suffered from bad passes and had trouble driving to the basket in the second. The Lady Wildcats led 8-6 at the end of the first period and 34-24 at the end of the third.

Kristie Mason kept South Forsyth in the game in the second period, when she hit every shot: three field goals, a free throw and a 3-pointer. But the Lady Wildcats kept her from scoring in the first and third periods and allowed her only a 3-pointer in the final eight minutes.

South Forsyth stole the ball numerous times in the second period, with Mason and Samantha Croce converting two steals into successful layups.

Dunwoody's first victory in the Longhorn Shootout improved the team's record to 3-7, while South Forsyth continues its season with only two wins.

"It's always good to end on a win," said Dunwoody coach Angela Nash. "I thought we played well together and had a good defensive effort. I just thought all the players contributed. This was a confidence-builder and a good win for all of them."

Dunwoody's next game is against Lithonia Jan. 7.
