Fall Events: Painting Exhibit, Mother-Son Challenge, Islam for Jews Class and More

Here’s a look at upcoming fall events at the Marcus Jewish Community Center in Dunwoody. All events are open to the public.

Exhibition of Paintings by Archie Rand: GODS CHANGE, PRAYERS ARE HERE TO STAY

When: On display through November 30, 2014

Where: The MJCCA’s Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery (MJCCA, 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)

Cost: Free and Open to the Community

Details: These 24 original paintings by internationally-renowned artist Archie Rand provide a visualization of Yehuda Amichai’s beautifully iconoclastic poem on G-d, prayer, and Jewish life. This exhibition also includes the full text of Amichai’s work.

Mother Son Challenge Day

Details: Mothers, bring your sons to the MJCCA for an action-packed afternoon! Challenge

Day events include climbing on our mobile rock wall, activities on our low ropes

Lunch ‘N Learn Featuring Rabbi Adam Starr (Orthodox)

Swing Into Shabbat

When: Friday, Sept. 12, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Where: MJCCA at Zaban Park Tennis Courts (5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody)

Cost: Free and open to the community

Details: Families are invited to slam, volley, and swing into Shabbat on the tennis courts at

the JCC. Juan Arico and other coaches will be on hand to engage you and your children in activities and fun skill building sessions. Rabbi Glusman will lead Shabbat songs and blessings followed by a visit from the Weinstein School Shabbat Dinosaur! Challah and grape juice will be served. Children of all ages are welcome and should bring tennis racquets and wear comfortable clothing. Rain or shine.

Camp Barney Medintz (CBM) Open House

“Islam for Jews” Class

Details: This class is a great opportunity to gain a more complete understanding and appreciation for Islam and Muslims. In this course which will include visits to local mosques as well as Muslim guest speakers, we will explore questions such as: What role did Judaism play in the origin of Islam?; Who was Muhammad and what was his message?; What does Islam teach?; What’s in the Qur’an?; or Is Islam a religion of violence or peace?

“Not Yet Ready For Prime Time Women of the Bible” Class

“Our Master Story” Class

Details: Our Master Story continues as we complete the Book of Numbers. We will then begin our exploration of the final book of the Torah, Deuteronomy, in which Moses updates all of the Torah’s teachings for the Israelites, in preparation for their entering into the Promised Land. We begin with our own interpretations of the text, and then we enrich our understanding by studying the interpretations of medieval and contemporary commentators.
