Battalion Chief Doug Brown said the homeowner was home when the fire started.

"She heard something in the area of the kitchen/laundry room," he said. "It was already on fire when she went in there."

It took firefighters four minutes from being dispatched to arriving on the scene.

They were able to get the fire under control in about 10-15 minutes, Brown said. There was extensive fire damage in the kitchen area, smoke damage throughout the first floor and some smoke damage in the second floor, he said.

Flames did come out of the back window of the kitchen and caused damage to the rear of the house, he said. The fire also began to spread to teh garage, next to the kitchen. Firefighters had to cut a large hole in the garage door to stay safe while fighting the fire.

Brown said the structure of the home was still intact. He didn't have an estimate on the cost of the damages.

It isn't clear how long it took for the call coming into ChatComm to be transfered to DeKalb County dispatch, to actually being dispatched (Dunwoody Patch will update when that information is available).
