Georgia Perimeter College Will Host USG Student Advisory Council

Zachary Richmond, Student Government Association president on Georgia Perimeter College Dunwoody Campus, is waiting for his chance to talk to top state officials about the things that concern college students

“I’m interested in asking Georgia’s leadership about the consolidation of two-year colleges with technical schools and what affect that will have on GPC students,” Richmond said. “I want to learn what’s going on and why it is happening so I can keep students at GPC better informed.”

Richmond will meet with state legislators in Atlanta on Thursday, Feb. 2, and he won’t be alone. He’ll be joined by college student government presidents from each the 35 member colleges in the University System of Georgia. The annual Student Advisory Council meeting brings campus presidents together each year to address state officials and to talk with each other about the condition of higher education in Georgia. This year, Georgia Perimeter is hosting the council.

“Part of their job as student leaders is to meet with each other and address concerns that matter on each and every college in the USG,” said Theodora Johnson, student life director on GPC Dunwoody Campus. “The topics they examine generally range anywhere from tuition and fee increases to public safety issues on campus. The council also serves the purpose of advising the Board of Regents, through the Chancellor, on issues that are important to students.”

The two day student summit will begin on Thursday and includes sessions on “Changes to HOPE and Current Challenges,” “Serving as an Effective Intermediary between Administration and Students” and “Emerging Issues within USG and How to Effectively Work with Campus Constituents and Media.” The meeting will also include a conversation with USG Chancellor Hank Huckaby and a welcome reception led by GPC President Dr. Anthony S. Tricoli.

“It’s an opportunity to meet with state leaders, campus leaders and student government presidents from across the state,” Richmond said. “I’m going to learn a lot more about the USG and by having so many college representatives here on the Dunwoody Campus, I think they will get to see the great diversity we have at GPC. We’re a reflection of the diversity that makes up the perimeter.”
