Lady Wildcats Fall in First Round of Longhorn Shootout

Saddled with injuries, the DHS girls basketball fell to 2-8 on the season Saturday at Kell High School's tournament

With three starting players injured or otherwise absent, the Dunwoody High School girls team struggled against a more polished St. Piux X team Saturday in the first round of the Longhorn Shootout basketball tournament at Kell High School in Marietta.

St. Pius took charge in the first quarter and led 12-4, upping its lead to 30-9 at the half, 38-18 at the close of the third quarter and winning with a 58-25 score. With a 28-6 lead late in the first half, St. Pius began substituting freely, which contributed to the Golden Lions' balanced scoring attack.

"We were short-handed, but that's still no excuse," said Dunwoody Coach Angela Nash as the Wildcats fell to 2-8 for the season. "This is a young group. We have five seniors who are not necessarily experienced," contributing to the team's "inconsistency."

"I thought we hustled in spots," Nash added.

Cynthia Onyeneho led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 13 points and "was the most consistent on the floor," said her coach. Onyeneho didn't score in the first period but chipped in 5 points in the second and 7 in the third, also putting in five of eight free-throws.

Dunwoody had trouble driving to the basket, and St. Pius was able to steal the ball frequently.

Emma Ucinski led St. Pius' scoring with 11 points, including two 3-pointers and three of four free-throws. Sydni Payne scored eight of her 10 points in the third quarter, and Elizabeth Elliott sparked the Golden Lions with six of her 10 points in the first quarter. Ten Golden Lions contributed to St. Pius scoring.

"We have to regroup and come back Monday," said Nash. Despite the disappointing outcome for the Lady Wildcats, "it's better to play than practice," said the coach.

The Wildcats will play Wheeler (3-6) in the next round of the tournament Monday at 3 p.m.
