Road Work to Bring Lengthy Traffic Delays on I-285 This Weekend

Drivers who typically use Interstate 285 to get around metro Atlanta should plan on extra travel time as they head out the door this weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will have crews out working on multiple projects this weekend on the perimeter, according to a press release from the agency.

GDOT notes traffic pacing is also likely Saturday overnight at the I-285’s Kennedy interchange with Interstate 75.

The weekend work includes:

• Concrete slab replacement on I-285 between South Cobb Drive and Paces Ferry Road will require a continuous closure of two northbound (inner loop) and two southbound (outer loop) lanes between from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8;
• I-285 sign work between Northlake Parkway and Lawrenceville Highway in DeKalb County will require one continuous lane closure in both directions throughout the weekend; and
• On the bottom end of the perimeter, resurfacing will require the closure of one lane of the outer loop exit ramp to southbound Interstate 75 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (the ramp will remain open throughout the work) and bridge repairs will necessitate closing one outside lane (and one Interstate 85 northbound lane) at their interchange all weekend.
• In Sandy Springs, the agency will have one outside lane and outside shoulder closed in both directions throughout the weekend between the S.R. 400 interchange and Roswell Road for sign footing construction as well as two inner loop lanes and one outer loop lane between Roswell Road and Northside Drive.

This work will coincide with the planned traffic shift on Georgia 400 just near the former Toll Plaza.

The shift will occur over the span of two overnights, weather permitting. Northbound traffic will be shifted starting at 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, with work extending into the early hours of Saturday morning. At 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, the southbound shift will begin. The shift will occur north of the Lenox Road interchange.
