You Think Inman Park Is Crowded Now. . .

The Inman Park neighborhood gained 1,243 new residents between 2000 and 2010, according to the latest U.S. Census department figures.

That's an annual growth rate of 4.7 percent for the neighborhood, which has 3,906 residents, up from the 2,161 in 2000. The number of households increased by 980 — an annual growth rate of 6.7 percent — to 2,451 over that 10-year period.

In contrast, Atlanta as a whole lost population, shrinking to 420,001 residents from 500,000, for annual decline of 1.6 percent, according to David Laube, vice president of the Inman Park Neighborhood Association.

He made his presentation at the group's January meeting Wednesday night.

And while some would consider Inman Park fairly built out, Laube said the neighborhood has several parcels — zoned for apartments and townhomes — that could accommodate more residents.

In fact, he's projecting that by 2020, the neighborhood will have 5,400 residents.

Inman Park's growth in the last decade is not unique. The Old Fourth Ward, Virginia-Highland, Midtown and other neighborhoods saw healthy increases in residential population, Laube said.
