UPDATED: Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Recalls Smoke Alarm
More than 18,000 photoelectric smoke alarms recalled for counterfeit UL labels
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department is recalling 18,507 photoelectric smoke alarms distributed to residents and businesses through its Atlanta Smoke Alarm Program because they had counterfeit Underwriters Laboratories labels affixed to them.
Underwriters Laboratories — UL — is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization.
The smoke alarm being recalled can be identified by a silver UL label affixed to the back of the unit, and the three sets of five slotted vents on the front side. Any Atlanta resident who has, or think they might have this smoke alarm should immediately call the Atlanta Smoke Alarm Recall Hotline at 404-546-2733. They also may send an e-mail to: smokealarm@atlantaga.gov to receive an inspection, replacement and installation for free.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has an active probe into the case involving the smoke alarms, which were purchased in 2005 and 2006 from Silver Sails Inc. in Calabasas, Calif.
Because the UL certification labels are conterfeit, those smoke alarms may not have been properly tested and anyone with them should remove them from service.

Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin J. Cochran is scheduled to address the recall at a 10 a.m. news conference Friday at the department's Peachtree Street headquarters.
A fire department spokesman told EastAtlanta.Patch.com the agency, which is studying its legal options, will detail what steps people with the smoke alarms should take to return them.
Bob Silver, a principal of Silver Sails, said he was unaware of the situation and declined comment Thursday.
