Atlanta International School and Fulton County CASA to continue child abuse prevention campaign into second month

Students and volunteers will team up again on May 5 to plant pinwheels around school campus to spark discussion about child abuse.

Students from Atlanta International School will plant pinwheels around their school campus May 5 in an effort to continue April’s Pinwheel for Prevention child abuse awareness campaign into a second month.

The students will be joined by volunteers and staff members from Fulton County Court Appointed Special Advocates, a nonprofit dedicated to helping find safe, permanent homes for children in foster care. This will mark the second time the two groups will have teamed-up to participate in the pinwheel campaign. Early in April, AIS students and CASA volunteers planted pinwheels on the Romae T. Powell Juvenile Justice Center campus in downtown Atlanta as a kick-off event for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Katina Hawkins, Community Development manager at Fulton County CASA, was excited to work again with the students of Atlanta International Schools. β€œIt’s really inspiring to see young people engage in a cause that supports children who too often have been forgotten by adults.”

Pinwheels for Prevention is a campaign developed by Prevent Child Abuse America to increase awareness by generating curiosity and discussion among those passing pinwheel gardens in their community.

Hawkins hopes to continue the conversation about child abuse prevention into Foster Care Month in May and to use the momentum built up from one campaign to support the next. β€œWe felt that the pinwheels would carry over nicely and will be an effective tool to remind people of the links between child abuse and foster care.”
